Energy is where founders most often start from an idea rather than a finished liquid — a caffeine level, a flavour direction, a functional claim. That makes the Services column the one to read first. A facility marked "Filling only" expects you to arrive with a validated recipe, a supplier list and a spec sheet. One marked "Formulation" will build it with you.
The second thing this category rewards is caffeine and ingredient compliance. Caffeine content, functional claims and label wording are all regulated territory, and the facilities that handle energy routinely are the ones that have done the paperwork before.
The third is format. Energy has largely standardised on the slim and sleek can, which is good news: it is the most widely available line in the country, and the one with the most competition on price.
54 facilities, against 4 in Massachusetts and 5 in Connecticut. A brand searching by state is choosing from a handful; a brand searching by category is choosing from dozens.
That matters because liquid ships and expertise does not. A brand in Texas will happily use a Wisconsin plant that knows energy formulation. The reverse is rarely true: nobody picks a nearby facility that has never run their category.
Sort this table by what you actually need. If you have a finished recipe, ignore the formulation column entirely and read the minimum. If you do not, the minimum is the second question — the first is who will help you build the liquid.
"Formulation" on a website can mean two very different things. Some facilities employ food scientists and will develop a recipe from a brief. Others will adjust a base formula they already own. Ask which, and ask who owns the resulting recipe — that second question is the one founders forget.
A published minimum in gallons is not a published minimum in cases. Several facilities here quote in gallons, which is a batching unit, not a case count. Roughly, 1,000 gallons is about 1,000 cases of 12 oz — but ask them to confirm in cases before you plan a launch around it.
