Wine co-packers

40 facilities pack wine, and every one of them is alcohol-licensed — there is no other way. But 9 of the 40 are not buildings at all: they are mobile canning operators who drive a line to your winery. Read that column before anything else, because it decides whether this page is useful to you.

40 facilities, 7 publish a minimum

Published minimums first, then alphabetical. Mobile canning operators are marked under the facility name — they charge by the day and travel within a radius rather than quoting a case minimum, so their rows are not comparable with the fixed plants above and below them.

The pattern

Custom crush, mobile bottling, co-packing — three different things

The wine trade uses three words where other categories use one, and they are not interchangeable. Custom crush is a fixed facility that makes the wine for you, from fruit through to bottle. Mobile bottling or canning is a line that drives to your site and packages wine you already made. Co-packing is the generic term this site uses for both. If you ask a custom crush facility for a co-packing quote you will get an answer to a question you did not ask, and vice versa.

31 plants and 9 trucks

Traditional wine bottling happens inside wineries, on their own lines or with mobile bottling trucks, and most of it never appears in a co-packing directory. What did appear over the last decade is canning capacity — and a large part of that capacity has wheels. 9 of these 40 are mobile operators. The other 31 are fixed facilities.

The distinction is not cosmetic. A mobile canner is the right answer if you already have wine in tank, a licensed site and nowhere to package it. It is no answer at all if you have no production site of your own. Among the 31 fixed plants, 25 fill cans and 20 fill glass — so even there, canned wine is what this list is mostly built on.

16 of the 40 are in California, with 3 more in Oregon and 3 in Washington. That is the West Coast wine corridor doing what you would expect, and it means a brand outside those states is choosing from a genuinely thin national list.

Why this page is different

Licensing is not optional and not a differentiator

All 40 hold alcohol authorisation, so unlike every other page on this site, the Alcohol column tells you nothing here. It is table stakes.

What does separate them is bonded status and where your wine sits while it waits. Wine moves under federal excise rules from crush to shelf, and a transfer in bond between two bonded premises is a different transaction from a taxpaid shipment. Ask before you move a single gallon.

7 of the 40 publish a minimum — roughly the national average of one in six, which for a category this specialised is better than it sounds. 18 of the 31 fixed plants list formulation among their services — ask what that covers for a wine before you count on it.

Transfer in bond is the question wine founders miss. Whether your product moves taxpaid or in bond decides when excise is owed and by whom. It is a contractual detail with a real cash-flow consequence.

Before you call

Two things worth reading twice

A day rate and a case minimum are not comparable. Mobile operators quote a visit — travel, setup, a minimum batch to make the trip worthwhile. Fixed plants quote a run. Putting the two side by side in a spreadsheet without noting which is which is the most common mistake we see.

Canned wine is a different product spec, not just a different container. Sulphur dioxide, pH and free SO2 all interact with the aluminium liner, and a can that is fine at bottling can fail months later. Ask what liner they use and what they have run in it.
